As shrines and idol worshipping gain prominence and a significant portion of young people abandon churches in favour of traditional worship, the town union leadership in Umuchu, Aguata Local Government area, Anambra State, appears powerless.
According to ZINGTIE research, idol worship is becoming more popular in the town every day as young people decide to return to idol worship after feeling that they haven’t benefited anything from attending churches over the years.
As a result, people are travelling to various cities and states with various shrines, to which they have resorted, and some of them are currently working as indigenous physicians.
The consequences of Umuchu town’s idolatry have begun to materialise. The main streams of Umuchu town, including the Ubo, Iyiushi, Iyiwoku, Iyiocha, Ayomiri, and Iyi Osu rivers, are currently contaminated due to sacrifices made by traditional worshippers who think the sacrifices are effective in the streams.
Since many indigenous people rely on boreholes for their subsistence, the foul and contaminated environment prevents them from going to local streams and rivers to collect water.
The communities of Amanasaa, Ibughubu, Achalla, Ugwuakwu, Umugama, and Akukwa are among those that are primarily affected by shrines and idol worship. The young people who claim prosperity since they began worshipping idols are also the most impacted.
An indegene claimed that the amazing growth of idol worship began when one of the wealthy indigenous people returned home and constructed a multistory structure dedicated to the Uchu deity in the market square, drawing the interest of the young people.
The man said that after getting into problems overseas and calling on the Uchu Diety, he managed to get out of it and returned home with enormous quantities of money, which he used to construct a hotel and raise awareness of idol worship in Umuchu town.
Because of the effect on the young people, who think that idolatry will help them succeed in life, several indigenous people have voiced their concern about the town’s awful state.
Achalla, one of the villages in Umuchu town, has declared that due to the influence on the community and the youth, people should refrain from performing sacrifices at the communal streams. The announcement drew criticism and opposition from the idolaters, who argued that it violated their constitutionally guaranteed liberty to practise their religion.
The dispute might have influenced the decision made by Umuchu Town’s leadership, which was headed by President General Ozo Charles Ezenwabasili, and other villages to impose stringent rules on offering sacrifices in the town’s numerous rivers and streams.
While the number of people who worship idols is growing and has now established powerful coalitions to advance idol worship in Umuchu town, the membership of the major churches, including the Catholic, Anglican, Salvation Army, and others, is declining everyday.
Ozo Charles Ezenwabasili, the president general of the Umuchu town union, had his known phone number turned off, therefore attempts to reach him were unsuccessful.
