Six months after Governor Umo Eno made the audacious decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party that put him in office, the party has refused to part with his photos.

Eno’s official photo was prominently placed on key locations and offices during a visit to the PDP party secretariat in Atan Offot, Uyo on Wednesday. His campaign posters were also visible on the secretariat’s walls.

Even PDP supporters have expressed disapproval of the scenario, wondering why the governor’s pictures are still on display at the party secretariat after his formal defection to another party.

The persistence of Umo Eno’s campaign posters in the PDP Secretariat, according to worried PDP leaders, may be a reflection of his declaration that he would continue to run the party even when he is no longer a member—a claim that has not pleased PDP supporters.

Aniekan Akpan, the former chairman of the PDP in Akwa Ibom, has been charged of accompanying the governor to APC events, a move that was allegedly weakening the PDP in the state.

Following the dissolution of the Aniekan Akpan-led Exco, the National Working Committee of the PDP established a new group led by Umoren Iquat, which caused the party to divide into two camps in the state.

However, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the national secretary of the party, sent a letter opposing this decision.

Akpan urged members to ignore the earlier declaration that his executives had been dissolved, telling reporters at a news conference that he was still in charge of the party in the state.

He said that the National Working Committee (NWC), which is reported to have fired them, never held a formal meeting before making this decision. He further mentioned that the PDP National Secretary had released a press release regarding this.

“Furthermore, we have it on good authority that the National Working Committee, NWC, of our party did not convene any formal sitting to take such a decision.

“The National Secretary of the PDP, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, has issued a press release discountenancing such publications, affirming that no formal sitting of the NWC was held to sanction the dissolution of our State Exco.” He said.

But according to a group called PDP Advocates for Peace and Justice, headed by PDP leader Dr. Tom Fredfish, “it is an open secret that Aniekan Akpan has been fraternizing with the APC while pretending to remain in the PDP. No one can serve two masters; therefore, he should stop deceiving the public, quit the PDP, and formally register with his new political home – the APC.”

When journalists visited the party secretariat, Aniekan Akpan was not in the office, therefore attempts to communicate with a segment of the party were unsuccessful. Additionally, his phone lines were unreachable.

“He is not in the office, he may have traveled because he usually comes to work everyday,” an official of the party told reporters.

Prior to the governor’s defection and the formation of two PDP groups, Akwa Ibom was a PDP stronghold. It’s hard to predict where the state’s political tide will turn in the general elections in 2027.
