Robert Fico, the prime minister of Slovakia, was shot at close range during an attempted assassination, but the surgery, according to the authorities, was successful.
Tomas Taraba, Fico’s deputy, told the BBC of this.
He reported that the surgery had gone “well” and that “I guess that in the end, he will survive”.
`Mr. Fico, 59, was previously reported to be “fighting for his life” following his serious injuries sustained during the Handlova, a small village, assassination attempt.
At the scene of the incident, a suspect was taken into custody.
It was an attempt at assassination with political motivation, according to Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estoka.
Mr. Fico was struck in the stomach and arm by five close-range rounds fired by the assailant.
According to Defence Minister Robert Kalinak, he was taken to the hospital immediately after the incident and spent many hours there “fighting for his life” in surgery.
