The arrest of former governor and current senator Aminu Tambuwal by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has been denounced by the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, in Sokoto State.
Tambuwal, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives and eight-year governor of Sokoto State, was arrested by the EFCC on Monday for allegedly making N189 billion in illicit cash withdrawals.
Hassan Sanyinnawal, the party’s publicity secretary, said in a statement on Tuesday that the detention was politically motivated and intended to silence the opposition.
While dismissing accusations of corruption against its own members, the PDP charged that the Federal Government, led by the All Progressives Congress, was using the anti-graft agency to frighten political rivals.
It asked anti-graft agencies to act impartially and urged its followers to maintain composure.
