On Christmas Eve, when his mother was waiting for the pair at her house to enjoy the holiday, a soon-to-be father from Missouri, USA, was allegedly shot and died while defending his pregnant fiancée during a fight with his father.
Harold Luster, the father, was accused with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in relation to his son Kevin Ward’s death.
“A senseless act took my baby away from me,” Katherine Ward tearfully told KSDK last week Friday.
According to Ward, before the couple intended to go to Luster’s house, Kevin, 26, and his fiancée, Kaitlyn, had paid her a visit on Christmas Eve.
“(Harold) and another family member had been arguing prior, that did not have nothing to do with Kevin,” Ward explained.
“He was already worked up over that incident.”
According to court documents cited by the publication, Luster allegedly accused Kaitlyn of “withholding information” and Ward’s mother of cheating on him.
According to the police, when Kevin stepped in, Luster grabbed a gun.
Luster asked Kaitlyn if she wanted to be shot, the Kansas City Star reported. As she was getting ready to host the couple for Christmas Eve, Ward claimed Luster called her during the disagreement and she heard her son ask, “Dad, why are you doing this? I don’t deserve this,” before he ended the call.
He is charged with shooting his son dead in the forehead a short while later.
After that, Luster allegedly called Ward again and claimed to have shot someone.
“Kevin died with a gunshot to his forehead and his hands tucked in his pockets,” Ward told the outlet.
“He was ultimately going to shoot Kevin’s fiancée and Kevin sacrificed himself, he was the hero that night. He would rather die than have her and that baby taken.”
The distraught mother described their relationship as “on and off again” and claimed she never cheated on Luster.
She also said that at the time he allegedly killed their son, he was living with another woman and had abused her physically and psychologically.
According to his mother, Kevin and Kaitlyn were expecting their child in June.
Ward, a maintenance employee at the Missouri Department of Transportation, stated that her son’s primary objective was to establish a loving family and purchase a home for his child.
With tears in her eyes, Ward told the source, “I will have to sit there and hold his baby for the first time because he won’t be able to.”
“My son was the best. He was a great kid that didn’t deserve that night and I wish 1,000 times he never went down there. But me and him never would have thought this would ever happen. It’s almost like I’m in a nightmare and I can’t get out.”
In relation to his son’s death, Luster was taken into custody on Wednesday evening and charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
He is in jail without bond in Jefferson County.
According to KSDK, he entered a not guilty plea on Thursday and is scheduled to appear in court again on January 3 for his bond review hearing.
Ward, who is anticipated to be present at the court, stated that she will fight to ensure that her son’s death was not in vain.
“My son cannot breathe, my son cannot walk, my son cannot see, my son is not here no more. Why should (Harold) get the pleasure of sitting, even though it’s a jail cell, he’s still alive, and I want him to suffer every day at that memory,” Ward stated.
“As far as justice, he deserves life.”
