South Africa court declares Zuma ineligible to contest elections

Jacob Zuma cannot run in the general election scheduled for May 29 in South Africa, according to a ruling made by the Apex Court of that country on Monday.

Because anyone serving a sentence of more than twelve months in jail is prohibited from running for office by the constitution, Justice Leone Theron declared that Zuma is ineligible for the parliamentary elections.

Theron declared, “This court concludes that Mr Zuma was convicted of an offence and sentenced to more than 12 months imprisonment and is accordingly not qualified to stand for election to the National Assembly.”

ZINGTIE recalls that in a 2021 instance, Zuma was found guilty of contempt of court and given a 15-month sentence, but he ultimately served less than three months.
