South Africa gets first female chief justice

Mandisa Maya was selected by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday to be the next chief judge of South Africa.

Chief Justice Raymond Zondo’s term expires on August 31. The newly nominated chief justice of the federation takes office on September 1.

With the appointment of Mandisa Maya, South Africa will have its first female chief justice, marking a historic moment in the nation’s history.

Maya, who is sixty years old, is the deputy chief justice at the moment.

Following Maya’s nomination in February, President Ramaphosa verified Maya’s appointment following discussions with the Judicial Service Commission and political parties, the Presidency said in a statement.

Maya is one of four women serving as permanent judges on the Supreme Court. She is married and has three children.

Analysts have characterised South Africa as having an uncommonly high degree of female participation in public life due to the significant role that women play in both the legislative and judicial branches of government.

Not only do women make up over 40% of federal lawmakers, but they also hold the position of speaker and deputy speaker of the National Assembly.
