The Asaba Specialist Hospital marked World Health Day with a week-long free medical screening initiative for over 200 staff members, prioritising their health and well-being.

The Chief Medical Director, Dr Peace Ighosewe, said the event reflects the hospital’s commitment to community health and its role in promoting wellness. “We decided to take the opportunity of World Health Day to give back to our staff to ensure that they have access to free health checks, which is a way of ensuring that we have a healthy workforce,” she explained.

Dr Ighosewe added, “Because as much as they are giving care to people, day in and day out, it may not occur to them to get checked. Some of them may not be able to afford the cost of most of these tests. And we said, It’s time to have a healthy workforce.”

The weeklong event offered various screenings, including eye checks, electrocardiograms (ECGs), laboratory tests, and dental care. The grand finale featured health talks and presentations from the dental and obstetrics departments, focusing on oral hygiene and maternal health.

Staff members expressed their appreciation to Dr. Ighosewe for the free medical screening program. Angela Okonta, nurse in charge of the Female Medical Ward, said: “I’m so thankful to the Chief Medical Director for this initiative. As healthcare workers, we often put others first, but this screening has shown that our well-being matters too.”

Franklin Omashor, Chief Accountant of the hospital, also praised the initiative, saying, “I was extremely pleased with the thoroughness of the dental check… The fact that the hospital is investing in its staff’s well-being like this is truly commendable.”

Rinma Ogorchukwu, another staff member, applauded the hospital’s management for organising the free medical screening programme, stating that it was a much-needed initiative that had greatly benefitted the staff. She encouraged the hospital to continue offering such initiatives in the future.

Dr. Ighosewe extended profound gratitude to the Delta State Government and Ministry of Health for creating an enabling environment for the hospital to thrive
