The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, on Saturday advised against unstructured distribution of palliatives and relief items in the country over the Christmas period.

Egbetokun gave the warning while reacting to the recent stampedes in Oyo, Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Nigeria Police Force’s Public Relations Officer, revealed this in a statement.

Recall the terrible event that happened in Ibadan on Wednesday? A stampede at a children’s fun fair killed at least 35 children and seriously injured numerous more.

Additionally, a stampede on Saturday killed at least 20 people from the Okija village in Anambra State at an event meant to distribute rice to the less privileged.

Additionally, according to ZINGTIE, a stampede that broke out during the Saturday distribution of rice and other food items at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the Maitama neighbourhood of Abuja claimed an unknown number of lives.

The risks to public safety during unplanned palliative distribution and funfairs organised by organisations, individuals, and groups were underlined by the IGP.

He added that such unplanned activities could result in stampedes and other occurrences that could threaten lives.

In order to pursue legal action, the IGP directed the police commissioners in the impacted states to conduct in-depth investigations into the incidents.

He wished the injured a speedy recovery and shared his sympathies with the families of the deceased.
