The Niger State Ministry of Mineral Resources, in coordination with security operatives, has announced the arrest of 41 individuals involved in unlawful mining across various locations in the state.

Among those detained were 34 men and 7 women.

The enforcement operation, which took place on Friday and was overseen by Commissioner Alhaji Garba Yahaya, focused on key areas known for illicit mining activities. These included the vicinity behind the PDP Secretariat near El-Amin University and the Caterigwari Mechanic Village in Minna.

During the crackdown, authorities seized various tools used in the illegal operations, such as pulping machines, shovels, hoses, and other rudimentary mining equipment.

Alhaji Yahaya reiterated the government’s firm resolve to put an end to unauthorized mining, highlighting its damaging effects on the environment and land quality.

He appealed to local leaders and landowners to stop selling land to unlicensed miners, stressing that such practices encourage destructive operations that negatively impact both the ecosystem and the welfare of the people.

The Commissioner called on residents to continue supporting the campaign against unlawful mining, emphasizing that meaningful and lasting progress requires joint efforts.

He also reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Umar Mohammed Bago’s administration to ensuring a safe and economically prosperous state that appeals to both domestic and international investors.

Alhaji Yahaya emphasized that the clampdown on illegal mining will persist until the practice is fully eradicated from the state.

“This government is determined to restore order, protect our environment, and ensure that the resources of Niger State benefit all its people,” he said.
