President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been urged by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to cease offering financial incentives in US dollars, claiming that doing so betrays a lack of regard for Nigeria’s own currency, the Naira.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s spokesperson, said as much in a post on X on Tuesday.
He responded to the recent financial awards handed to the D’Tigress basketball team and the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s national women’s football team, in recognition of their accomplishments.
Abdullahi criticized the choice of currency used for the incentive, but he thanked the President for acknowledging the athletes’ achievements.
“We thank President BAT for amply rewarding our victorious Falcons and D’Tigress. But we find it strange that the President has repeatedly shown his disregard for the Nigerian sovereign currency by announcing the awards in US Dollars,” he wrote.
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) was mentioned as he concluded the tweet, saying: “Mr. President sir, NOA says, Stop the Naira Abuse.”
