According to Sola Adelani, a member of Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles squad, head coach Eric Chelle has made it clear he expects his players to show mental toughness and avoid behaving in a timid or overly cautious manner.

Adelani, who currently plays for Ikorodu City, is among the selected players representing Nigeria at the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which kicks off on Saturday, August 2, 2025, in Zanzibar.

Sharing his excitement, Adelani said donning the national colours has always been a personal ambition, and he’s thrilled to see that dream come to life.

He also praised Coach Chelle for his strong leadership and ability to effectively manage the team, describing his approach as inspiring and motivating.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the tournament, Adelani said, “The coach always says, ‘If you are not a warrior, you can’t play football. If you’re doing like a girl or a boy on the field, they’ll eat you. You must be like a lion’.

“He talks to me ‘Sola, if you have the ball, go one-on-one. Even though you lose the ball, it’s not a problem.’”

Nigeria is in the Group D of the competition alongside Senegal, Sudan and Congo.
