A sense of dread has settled over Florida International University’s campus after the school’s police department signed an agreement with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to enforce immigration laws on campus. For undocumented students like one undergraduate, the news was terrifying. “It’s scary and nerve-racking,” the student confessed, speaking on condition of anonymity due to fear of deportation.

The student, who fled El Salvador with his family at just 5 years old to escape gang violence, is now uncertain about his future at FIU. “I’ve been trying to avoid the main areas of campus where police are,” he admitted, describing how he’s changed his daily routine to minimise encounters with law enforcement.

FIU is not alone in this agreement. Several other Florida universities, including the University of Florida and Florida State University, have also partnered with ICE under the 287(g) program, which empowers local law enforcement to interrogate and detain immigrants for potential deportation

Governor Ron DeSantis hailed the agreements as a victory for law and order, stating, “Florida is setting the example for states in combating illegal immigration… That means deportations can be carried out more efficiently, making our communities safer as illegal aliens are removed.”

But at FIU, where Hispanic and Latino students make up over 63% of the student body, the partnership has sparked outrage. Faculty and students have rallied together, holding protests and demanding that the university reconsider its decision. At a recent protest, students waved a banner reading “No ICE @ FIU”, a powerful statement against the agreement.

As tensions simmer on campus, one thing is clear: the agreement has left many students feeling vulnerable and uncertain about their future. Will they be able to continue their education without fear of deportation? Only time will tell
