Thousands of students, survivors, and community members gathered at a vigil on the evening of April 18 to grieve and support each other after a devastating campus shooting left two people dead and several others injured. The shooting, believed to have been carried out by a student, shook the Tallahassee campus to its core.

FSU President Richard McCullough addressed the crowd, his voice choked with emotion. “We’re family. Hard moments like these… we show up for one another,” he said. “We need to keep doing that over the next weeks. Reach out, listen, be kind, be there.” McCullough acknowledged the range of emotions that come with tragedy, saying, “There is no manual on how we feel when something like this happens. I’m angry, you’re angry…. I’m completely numb. Some of you are scared. I understand that. All those feelings are normal. There’s no right response to tragedy. But I want to be clear — you’re not alone.

The victims who lost their lives were identified as Tiru Chabba, a dining vendor executive, and Robert Morales, a dining services employee. Six others, including students, were injured in the attack and are expected to fully recover.

The shooting occurred on April 17, near the student union, and was swiftly responded to by campus officers who apprehended the suspect, 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, within five minutes.

Despite the trauma, many students chose to stay on campus instead of heading home for the Easter holiday weekend. For Rachel Cannella, FSU is her home, and she refused to let the shooting dictate her actions. “We sat in those classrooms; this is where we walk every day to class; you can’t let someone take that away from us,” Cannella said at the Legacy Walk memorial. “I think we all share in knowing that this is where we belong, and this is our home, and we’re not going to back down.
