A fire outbreak that destroyed the school structure on Sunday has left several students at Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Ndiwo Itumbauzo, Bende LGA, Abia State, stranded.

Mr. Christopher Sunday, a PTA employee who saw the incident, stated that it happened at around ten in the morning, after the community had left for church, and that the classrooms were already locked when the fire broke out.

Sunday, who lamented that the lack of water caused the fire to spread to several local farmlands surrounding the school, claimed that community members had to break into the classrooms in order to save a few desks.

Uweola Onukwuo, the principal of Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, discussed the development, stating that the structure that was razed by the fire houses SS1, SS2, SS3 classrooms, the staff room, laboratory and hall.

According to Onukwo, despite the fact that it is inappropriate, the school administration has arranged for the impacted courses to temporarily relocate into an old building.

He added that he would formally complain about the development to the Ohafia and Umuahia education authorities.

According to Deacon Bassey Uwabunkeonye, the mayor of Bende local government area, the council would work with the community to make sure the children have a decent place to stay till the state government steps in. He also claimed that the source of the fire will be determined.

He also acknowledged that because Umuahia and Ohafia are far from the local government, the council should think about purchasing a fire engine for these uses.

Prince Innocent Iniewe, the community’s crown prince, made a plea to the state government to help rebuild the damaged structure.

When contacted by ZINGTIE on Friday, Chief Fire Officer of Abia State, Arua Nnanna said the fire outbreak has not been reported to his office, even as he stated that the state government has plans to establish fire fighting units in different LGAs, in cooperation with local government authorities.
