The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Nwoku Olaka Johnson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District bye-election conducted on Saturday.
The declaration was made at the INEC collation centre in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, by the Returning Officer, Professor Rosemary Ogu of the University of Port Harcourt.
According to the official results, Nwoku Olaka Johnson secured a total of 47,961 votes to emerge victorious, while the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osarosaka Ebenezer Erewari, finished second with 1,647 votes. Douglas Fabeke Beeka of the Action Alliance (AA) polled 1,175 votes.
The Labour Party (LP) candidate, Sam Kinanee Barikpoa, recorded 367 votes.
The four political parties that participated in the bye-election are members of the political coalition associated with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, with the group adopting Senator Olaka as its preferred candidate for the contest.
It would be recalled that the Rivers South-East Senatorial seat became vacant following the death of Senator Barry Barinada Mpigi in February 2026.
