Suspected armed herders and bandits have launched a deadly ambush against a team of security personnel in the Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State, resulting in multiple deaths and several operatives unaccounted for.

According to intelligence sourced by Zagazola Makama, the assault occurred on September 19 at Agu Centre. Reports indicate that the combined patrol comprising members of Operation Anyam Nyor, Operation Zenda, the Special Intervention Squad (SIS), and local security volunteers was caught in a carefully orchestrated ambush.

The attackers, armed with rocket-propelled grenades and other sophisticated weapons, engaged the team in a heavy exchange of gunfire.

During the clash, the head of the civil protection unit sustained an injury to his hand, while one police officer and two vigilante members lost their lives at the scene.

Later that day, the remains of two additional officers from Operation Zenda and Anyam Nyor, along with two more vigilantes, were recovered and transferred to the morgue at NKST Zaki Biam Hospital.

Sources further revealed that five officers and an unspecified number of local security volunteers were still missing at the time of filing this report.

The ambush also resulted in the destruction of two police vehicles, including a gun truck used by the Operation Zenda Joint Task Force. An armoured carrier belonging to SIS was rendered immobile but later retrieved with all personnel on board safe.

Additional forces from police tactical units and the Nigerian Army’s 401 Brigade have been deployed to the area and are actively confronting the attackers.

Meanwhile, adverse weather conditions have stalled aerial support from the Nigerian Air Force.
