A 46-year-old health worker, Akinola Oyabiyi, was killed by gunmen believed to be kidnappers in Ondo State.
The incident took place just a few meters from Akure Airport in Eleyowo, Akure North Local Government Area.
Oyabiyi was ambushed while driving home around 8 pm two days ago.
According to sources, Oyabiyi, a father of four, drove right into the path of the gunmen, who immediately opened fire. He later succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital.
In a similar incident, gunmen suspected to be herders recently killed five farmers in Ajegunle-Powerline, Akure North Local Council Area, with the attackers still at large.
In the past two weeks, more than 13 people have been abducted in the area, heightening tensions within the state, particularly in Akure metropolis.
A family member, who requested anonymity, explained: “He (Oyabiyi) was shot by gunmen while driving home, near the airport. The bullets struck him in the stomach. He was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately, he died and was later taken to the morgue.”
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, CSP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, confirmed the incident, stressing that the command’s tactical teams are actively searching for the assailants.
“We urge family members of victims to promptly report such incidents as they occur,” she said.
