Suspension: Court reveals date to deliver judgment on Natasha’s suit against Senate, Akpabio

The Federal High Court in Abuja’s Justice Binta Fatima Nyako has set June 27, 2025, as the date for her ruling in a lawsuit brought by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against the National Assembly, contesting her suspension by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petition due to alleged egregious misconduct.

Clerk of the National Assembly, the Senate, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and Senator Nedamwen Imasuen, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, was the target of the lawsuit filed by the Kogi Central senator.

Nyako set the date for the matter’s verdict on June 27 after hearing arguments for and against the suit.

The judge told the parties in her remarks that she would also rule on the contempt applications against Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio on the judgment date.

Paul Daudu, SAN, the Senate’s counsel, had charged Akpoti-Uduaghan with violating a court order by apologizing satirically on her Facebook page.

The legal team for Akpoti-Uduaghan also claimed that Akpabio used remarks made by senior attorneys Monday Ubani and Olisah Agbakogba in support of him during media appearances

Justice Nyako’s real decision from April 4th prevented Akpoti-Uduaghan, Akpabio, the Clerk of the National Assembly, the Senate, and Imasuen from doing media interviews or posting anything about the issue on social media while it was still pending in court.

Michael Numan, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s attorney, sought the court to reverse the Senate Committee’s judgment in order to provide his client with relief while adopting the documents that include the closing arguments. Additionally, he refuted the accusations of contempt of court.

The Senate President, Clerk of the National Assembly, the Senate, and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics Privileges and Public Petitions all argued against the court’s authority to hear the case.
They also asked the court to reject the case that the suspended senator from Kogi Central had brought.

Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan’s conflict began on February 20, 2025, at a Senate plenary session about seating arrangements.

Later, on an ARISE News show, Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment.

After the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions recommended that she be suspended for six months, she subsequently went to the Federal High Court to request an order prohibiting the Senate Committee from looking into her.

Following accusations from Akpabio’s camp, Justice Obiorah Egwuatu, who had originally been assigned to the case, resigned from overseeing it.
