Former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, has revealed that he is considering leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The party, which serves as the country’s main opposition, has been facing ongoing internal disputes since its presidential primaries in 2023.

Tensions within the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) have intensified, particularly over the issue of who holds the position of National Secretary.

On Wednesday, the NWC rejected the return of Senator Samuel Anyanwu to the role of National Secretary, stating that no formal decision to reinstate him had been made by any authorized party body.

Just a day prior, PDP stakeholders held a meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in an effort to resolve the leadership confusion, but the meeting ended without any conclusive outcome.

After the session with INEC, the party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagun, announced that Anyanwu had been asked to resume his duties as National Secretary.

However, this declaration contradicts the resolution from the PDP’s 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which deferred all decisions regarding the National Secretary role to the party’s 100th NEC session.

The ongoing turmoil has led to a wave of defections, with several party members switching allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

When asked in an interview whether he intended to follow suit, Suswam confirmed he was indeed contemplating leaving the PDP, citing the unresolved crisis within the party as his main reason.

“There is a possibility that I will; there are so many alternatives. There is LP, ADA, NNPP. APC can be alternative,” he said during an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday.

“APC, after all, is the ruling party, so I’m not ruling that out.”
