In a rush outside the Umayyad Mosque in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Friday, at least three ladies lost their lives and five children were seriously injured as they tried to receive free meals as part of a humanitarian event.
According to the Syrian Civil Defence, the incident happened at a feast organised by famous chef Abu Omari al-Dimashqi, who had invited everyone to a complimentary lunch in the courtyard of the old mosque in Damascus’ Old City.
Witnesses and local media claim that a lack of crowd control measures caused chaos as massive crowds poured into the mosque’s courtyard and surrounding regions.
According to reports, security guards showed up on the area and blocked off highways to control the crowds.
Religious and cultural activities are frequently held at the Umayyad Mosque, one of Damascus’ most recognisable structures.
It rarely hosts large public meetings and typically necessitates prior agreement with local authorities.
Following the sudden fall of the previous Syrian government in December 2024, the city’s security and public service systems are still getting used to the recent political unrest.
