Tariffs: China signals readiness for US trade talks, warns against threats

China has signaled that it is open to restarting trade negotiations with the United States.

This comes shortly after President Donald Trump floated the idea of lowering tariffs on imports from China.

Despite the gesture, Beijing cautioned that it would not participate in talks if pressure and threats persist.

“We don’t want a trade war, but we’re not afraid of one,” China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said.

“If we talk, the door is open.”

There are signs that both countries may be softening their approach.

Trump remarked that he wasn’t taking a “hardball” stance and expressed optimism about reaching an agreement. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also shared a hopeful outlook, anticipating reduced tensions.

This more conciliatory tone follows weeks of escalating tariffs and intense rhetoric that had unsettled global financial markets.

Markets reacted positively to the news, with the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong climbing 2.4% on Wednesday.

During a separate engagement with Azerbaijan’s president, President Xi voiced concerns about tariffs, saying they pose risks to the global trade system.

China also rejected recent U.S. activities in Latin America, accusing Washington of attempting to assert influence over the Panama Canal.

Beijing emphasized that constructive dialogue will only be possible if the U.S. abandons its threats and embraces mutual respect.
