A father’s cordial Easter welcome to his daughter descended into a string of fights that resulted in two injuries and the attempted murder of a 19-year-old female.
The 19-year-old and her parents got into two different fights after she told them she didn’t believe in God, which led to the Easter attack.
In connection with the violent brawl that occurred in her family’s home on Easter Sunday, April 20, in Vancouver, Washington, McKenzy Hafer has been charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder.
Officers discovered the defendant outside the house when they arrived on the scene at approximately 5:45 p.m. on the holiday. Inside, she saw that both of her parents had been stabbed.
According to Law & Crime, her brother, Dakota, was present in the house as well but was not a part of the startling event.
Benjamin Hafer, McKenzy’s father, started the whole argument by wishing his daughter a “Happy Resurrection Day.”
An altercation ensued after she responded that she did not believe in God. McKenzy finally gave in and repeated the words to her father, before the two entered separate rooms, according to reporting from CBS affiliate KOIN.
Erin Hetzler, McKenzy’s mother, allegedly questioned her about the prior argument with her father while she was cooking in the kitchen. This caused another dispute between her and her daughter, which escalated until McKenzy flung her phone on the ground.
Investigators said that Benjamin then entered to inquire about the phone on the floor and to find out what was happening. McKenzy allegedly told investigators that she then reached for a knife and stabbed her father in the abdomen, just above the belly button, with “intent to k!ll.”
Then, with “intent to k!ll,” she allegedly turned to her mother and used the same knife to cut her throat, according to the police report.
According to the arrest affidavit, her parents’ injuries aligned with her account of what happened. Both are anticipated to live.
The arraignment of McKenzy Hafer is set for May 5. Her bail has been set at $500,000. She is now being held.
