A 17-year-old named Victor Perez, who was shot by police officers over the past weekend, has been confirmed brain-dead, according to his aunt.
Perez, who relatives say was living with autism and cerebral palsy, sustained nine gunshot wounds during the incident in Pocatello.
Authorities had responded to a call from a neighbor reporting a person armed with a knife on April 5.
Ana Vazquez, the teen’s aunt, has confirmed to NBC News that he has been pronounced brain-dead.
Pocatello’s mayor, Brian Blad, shared a statement expressing his condolences.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time.
We recognize the pain and grief this incident has caused in our community,” Blad said.
