According to Billboard, Nigerian R&B singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known by her stage name Tems, is on track to become the first African performer to win two Grammys in a single night.
Tems is nominated for three Grammys this year: Best R&B Song for “Burning,” Best Global Music Album for “Born In The Wild,” and Best African Music Performance for “Love Me Jeje.”
According to Billboard, when the celebrities gathered at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 2nd, the diva would win two of the categories.
Tems’ “Love Me Jeje,” a sampling of Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 song of the same name, is predicted to win the Best African Music Performance category. This will put it ahead of songs like “Tomorrow” by Yemi Alade, “MMS” by Asake & Wizkid, “Sensational” by Chris Brown featuring Davido & Lojay, and “Higher” by Burna Boy.
But according to Billboard, American artist Chris Brown’s song “Sensational,” which features Davido and Lojay, was a “Look Out For.”
Given the singer’s background, Burna Boy’s “Higher” is a solid contender in the category, according to Billboard.
“Water” by South African youngster Tyla won the inaugural Best African Music Performance award last year.
Tems is also predicted to win the Best Global Music Album category with her debut album, “Born In The Wild.”
“Alkebulan II” (Matt B with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra), “Paisajes” (Ciro Hurtado), “Heis” (Rema), and “Historias De Un Flamenco” (Antonio Rey) are the other nominees in the category.
It’s interesting to note that Tems is this year’s lone prior Grammy winner in the category.
However, Antonio Rey’s “Historias De Un Flamenco” is a serious candidate in the category, according to Billboard.
Expectations may not reflect reality because the Grammys are often unexpected.
For the fifth time in a row, South African comedian Trevor Noah will present Music’s Biggest Night.
With eleven nominations overall, Beyoncé is the most prominent nominee at the 67th Grammy Awards.
