Many Nigerians are shocked by the shocking admission made by a grieving member of the Yelwata community in Benue State. He claims that soldiers sent to defend their town from violent attacks have let them down and in certain situations have even made the locals feel even more powerless.

When deadly herdsmen attacks occurred, Peter spoke movingly about how many people fled to military checkpoints only to find that some of the same assailants were roaming freely around the troops’ camp.

“The soldiers were of no help to us,” he said. “Sometimes, you’ll even see the herdsmen at their camp. It’s like we’re completely abandoned.”

In Benue, where innumerable lives have been sacrificed in recent weeks, his remarks have exacerbated the already mounting resentment and frustration. Security forces have responded little or not at all to the repeated attacks on a number of communities by shooters posing as armed herders.

With claims that security guards are either overworked or ignoring the situation, many locals feel deceived by the system. “We don’t have guns, we don’t have strength. All we can do is cry out,” Peter said, holding back tears.

As displaced families continue to live in terror and uncertainty, calls for government involvement have grown more urgent. Locals maintain that more lives would be lost unless the federal government and security services demonstrate genuine commitment, despite the Benue State government’s pledge to enhance community policing. Peter’s voice joins countless others who are pleading for action to stop the violence, not just words. “Retaliation is not what we want. All we desire is peace.
