Bello Turji, a notorious bandit leader, has said that two former northern governors are contributing to the nation’s insecurity, particularly in the North.
In a widely shared video that went viral on Sunday, Turji made this claim, accusing former political leaders in the states of Zamfara and Sokoto of creating the conditions for the region’s ongoing insecurity.
The bandit leader claims to have taken part in several peace negotiations with the Zamfara State government under the previous governor’s administration.
However, the bandit commander refuted allegations that he was given N30 million or any other tangible incentive to take part in the procedure.
Attempts to obtain the response from both past governors were unsuccessful at the time this article was filed.
Vanguard said that a number of people close to the former governors stressed that one should not believe or take seriously the remarks of a terrorist.
“Why would anyone want to place a premium on the words of a terrorist? Is it not clear that the terrorist is just trying to present himself as a victim? It is all lies,” one of the sources said.
Turji further stated that vigilante organizations known as “Yan Banga,” which he said disproportionately targeted Fulani communities and increased violence, were armed by previous administrations.
He notably called for the arrest and investigation of the past governors of Sokoto State and Zamfara State, citing their alleged roles in the crisis.
“We openly say that former governors of Zamfara and Sokoto states are responsible for the calamities that befell these states,” Turji claimed.
