The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has commissioned a state-of-the-art international conference centre at Bayero University Kano (BUK). The Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono, declared the centre open on Thursday, saying it was completed in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to support national development, global competitiveness, and financial independence for universities.

Echono stated, “He wants us to equip our institutions so that they can compete with any across the world; when you have a modern facility like this that competes with any other facility anywhere around the world, it shows that we are uplifting our standards.” He added that the centre would serve as a hub of activities, attracting conferences and boosting revenue generation for the university.

The TETFund boss noted that the fund had initiated a new intervention line to address abandoned and distressed projects, enabling the completion of the conference centre. “This centre will be a major source of activities and revenue, which can now attract any level of conferences to be hosted here,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor of BUK, Prof. Adamu Abbas, thanked TETFund for funding the project, saying the facility is equipped with all the requirements for an international conference centre. He added that the centre comprises over 38 rooms for accommodation, halls, and open spaces, among others.

The project was conceived by a former vice chancellor, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, over 15 years ago. Abbas urged the incoming vice chancellor to ensure the centre is used for its intended purpose. Echono assured the university’s new leadership of sustaining TETFund’s partnership, advising them to maintain the facilities properly.
