In an interview with Daily Trust, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), a former military head of state, discussed his experiences in office, the events leading up to and during the civil war, and his continued support for a united Nigeria.
Speaking about the civil war Nigeria waged under his military rule, Yakubu Gowon stated that an English journalist questioned him about why he believed the conflict was over and suggested that the populace would carry on with guerilla warfare after it was over. After the conflict, Gowon declared he was grateful that there were no guerrillas.
He said, “Let me deviate a little bit. I thank God that when the war ended, I did not capture Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu because I would have probably found it very difficult to handle with public opinion that would have encouraged me to deal with him.”
Further talking, he said, “This is because I knew that I would have done everything to save his life. But would it be the same thing if it was the reverse?”
