The Only recognized female traditional ruler in Igbo land is dead

The Igbo people had a single known traditional female ruler. She is no longer with us. Nneoha Human Resources Shortly after ruling Okpanam for 21 years, Obi Martha Dunkwu, also known as Omu Anioma, passed away following a brief illness. Igbo land has been in grief since her passing, particularly in her home state of Delta.

She passed away at the Asaba Specialist Hospital in the capital city of Delta State yesterday, Friday, February 16, 2024. She had been admitted there two days prior after becoming ill.

“The late Dunkwu epitomized beauty, courage, truthfulness, elegance and dignity of royalty,” says Political Economist NG, published by a foremost journalist from the area.

According to the portal, a wide range of respondents who expressed their opinions stated they would miss her for advocating for the unification of the Igbo people regardless of where they were born.

“She also campaigned for all Igbo sons and daughters to bring their wealth home and invest in the Igboland. She never shied away from her Igboness and a true Deltan.

“She consistently advocated for the inclusivity of the Traditional Institutions, Women and Youths in actualising the goals of peace, security and economic prosperity in the Niger Delta region.

“Recently, she was among eminent Nigerians invited by the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Hon. Abubakar Momoh, to evaluate years of work done on early warning signals, peacebuilding mechanisms for the Niger Delta.”
