Mr. Isaac Maduka, a resident of Umuekpa Akanu, Item, in the Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, has made a heartbreaking plea for justice. After being accused of stealing money from his mother, his 20-year-old son, Ndukwe Isaac, was allegedly beaten to death by young people in his neighborhood.
According to Mr. Maduka, his son had been residing in Okai Bende with his mother, Uwaezuo Isaac, where they both farmed rice and yams. He clarified that after his mother turned down his plea for money to buy clothes and shoes so he could blend in with his peers, the young man stole N110,000 from her secret stockpile.
Later, Ndukwe acknowledged that he had spent the remaining N75,000 on clothing, a radio, and electrical wiring supplies.
When Anyim Igwe, one of his mother’s brothers, brought the issue to the attention of the local youngsters, things became more heated. It is said that HRH Eze James Opara Ogbonna, the traditional ruler, gave the young people instructions on how to handle the matter.
In a startling and vicious turn of events, Ndukwe was beaten and had his hands and legs bound by the boys till he passed away.
Mr. Maduka claimed that when he first learned of his son’s passing, he was told to bury the body right away. He did, however, ask that the body be transferred to a mortuary because of the nature of the murder. Prophet Igwe Kalu, the community’s prime minister, allegedly threatened to set fire to the ambulance if the body was removed.
Some young people from the town apparently celebrated during the burial, which was eventually ordered by the traditional ruler at a certain spot.
In the meantime, Mr. Maduka was encouraged by ASP Maureen Chinaka, the state police spokesperson, to formally report the threats to the police so that the proper action could be taken.
