Following the fatal Saturday morning attack on the Yelewata community in Benue State’s Guma Local Government Area, where numerous persons were killed and property was damaged in a coordinated assault by suspected armed herdsmen, more information has come to light.

According to sources, the assailants broke into the town early in the morning and divided into three groups in order to enter Yelewata from several angles.

Tse Ate, a road that leads to Agugu Igbaakombo, and another route behind the neighborhood’s market square are said to have been the starting points of the attack.

Residents who spoke at the scene of the incident claim that the intruders divided local security efforts by firing in succession.

Police officers and young people tried to fend off the attackers, but their numbers and strategy overpowered them.

The third wave of assailants went through the back and attacked stores where many residents were sleeping, according to a statement released by Comrade Joseph Apahar Joo, Media and Publicity Officer for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) unit in Benue State.

“Those who attempted to flee were apprehended and killed.” Because the attackers had already sprayed fuel on the doors before igniting the buildings, some were unable to escape,” Comrade Joo stated.

The attack destroyed homes and shops, and victims were allegedly burned alive along with stored food and farm goods.

According to reports, Yelewata, which is renowned for its early defense against bloody invasions in Benue, has never been the target of an attack of this size.
