Former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has stated that he does not yell at defenders during matches because he doesn’t believe it is necessary.

He made this remark after being compared to Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar by former centre-back Rio Ferdinand.

Ferdinand, who had Courtois as a guest on his YouTube channel, drew the comparison due to Courtois’ “calming aura” on the field, similar to Van der Sar—his former teammate.

“That’s nice to hear. In that way, I’m a calm goalkeeper, you will not see me shout,” Courtois said.

“If you make a mistake, you already know you’ve made a mistake. It’s better to focus on the set piece straight away, organise your people properly, and when the ball comes into your box, say: ‘Hey, don’t do this anymore or try to do this.’ But shouting, waving your arms around—I don’t think it’s necessary.”

Courtois has been with Real Madrid since his £35 million transfer from Chelsea in 2018.

He has registered 107 clean sheets in 267 appearances across all competitions for Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

During his career, Manchester United legend Van der Sar kept 135 clean sheets in 266 appearances across all competitions for the Red Devils after his move from Fulham in 2005.
