On Friday, China accused Australia of intentionally provoking it with a maritime patrol in the contested South China Sea.
China asserted that Australia was spreading false narratives, while Australia maintained that its actions were in line with international law.
The incident involved Australia’s defense minister, who claimed a Chinese PLA J-16 jet released flares within 30 meters (100 feet) of an Australian aircraft. This came amid tensions between the two nations, fueled by recent dangerous interactions between their navy and air force.
The comments followed Australia’s condemnation of the jet’s “unsafe and unprofessional” conduct during a routine surveillance mission in international waters on Tuesday, which Beijing rejected.
A Chinese defense ministry spokesperson, Zhang Xiaogang, stated that Australia had intentionally violated China’s rights in the South China Sea and provoked China, accusing Australia of being the “villain” spreading false narratives.
Zhang criticized the Australian military aircraft for ignoring established routes in the busy waterway, likening it to “breaking into the homes of others,” and stated that China’s response was a reasonable and legitimate defense of its sovereignty.
“We urge Australia to abandon its illusion of speculation and adventure,” Zhang said.
