According to ZINGTIE, Akin Bash, a major All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, has questioned former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s decision to submit himself for screening while not intending to accept a cabinet position.
Bash brought up the issue following El-Rufai’s recent withdrawal from contention for a ministerial position under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. The former governor went through the Senate screening procedure but later denied the offer, claiming personal reasons.
According to PUNCH, Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, stated on Thursday that he never wanted a job in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet. He claimed he made this plain enough before Tinubu won the presidential election in 2023.
Speaking on the subject, Akin Bash criticised El-Rufai’s actions, claiming that they raised questions about his genuine INTE.
“If you never wanted an appointment, why did you submit yourself for screening at the House of Assembly, Bash asked. “This is a question that many APC members and Nigerians at large deserve an answer to.”
El-Rufai, a significant player in the APC, was initially one of the nominees for ministerial seats, but later reportedly notified President Tinubu that he would no longer be ready to serve.
Bash speculated that such a move could reveal deeper political undercurrents. “It sends mixed signals,” he explained. “At a time when the nation is expecting strong leadership and commitment, actions like this raise eyebrows.”
While El-Rufai has stayed mostly mute on the subject, political observers assume his departure is due to internal divisions or fears about his Senate screening outcome.
However, Bash emphasised the importance of responsibility. “Leadership is about responsibility . If a leader subjects himself to a process, he should be ready to see it through,” he concluded.
As talks about El-Rufai’s decision continue, many in the APC and outside will be watching to see if he clarifies his stance.
