Farouk Aliyu, a former close associate of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has taken a different stance from former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, over President Bola Tinubu’s involvement in Buhari’s 2015 election win.

Aliyu made his remarks on Thursday during an appearance on Politics Today, a political program aired by Channels Television.

Refuting Mustapha’s claims, Aliyu argued that although Buhari consistently drew about 12 million votes, those numbers alone had not secured him a presidential victory until his collaboration with Tinubu in 2015.

He further claimed that certain individuals who served under Buhari’s administration are attempting to distort historical facts, despite not having been part of the early political battles.

“My senior brother, Boss Mustapha, certainly got it wrong because I can’t even remember where he was at that time.

“Unfortunately, there are many of these Buhari converts who were not with Buhari. I don’t want to mention names but most of them happened by accident or fate to become what they became, and they are now trying to deconstruct history. It is not true,” he stated.

Aliyu went on to recognize Tinubu’s critical role in both securing Buhari’s candidacy under the All Progressives Congress and ultimately winning the 2015 presidential race.

He also shared his experience serving as Buhari’s returning officer during the APC primary election in Lagos, noting Tinubu’s behind-the-scenes support throughout the process.

In response to suggestions that Buhari failed to return the favor to Tinubu during the run-up to the 2023 election, Aliyu insisted that the former president had ample opportunity to derail the party’s chances, but deliberately chose not to.

“If Muhammadu Buhari did not want APC to win the election, he would have done several things to ensure that they don’t win,” he affirmed.

Mustapha, while speaking at a book launch in Abuja a day earlier, had argued that Tinubu was not responsible for making Buhari president. According to him, Buhari already had a solid base of around 12 million loyal voters, and the formation of the APC added only about three million more votes.
