President Bola Tinubu has affirmed that his administration recognizes sports as a powerful tool for strengthening national unity.
Speaking on his behalf, Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Public Communication and former Minister of Youth and Sports, made the statement during the official opening of the 9th National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba on Friday. He also expressed the government’s commitment to further investing in sports development.
The President expressed his confidence that sports development was in capable hands under Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Youth Sports Commission (NYSC), and Bukola Olopade, the Commission’s Director General, both of whom he praised as experienced sportsmen. He noted that they would continue to drive the country’s sporting success.
He also emphasized that the NYG played a crucial role in identifying young talents who have gone on to represent Nigeria with pride at both national and international sports events.
President Tinubu extended his gratitude to the Delta State government and its people for hosting the 9th edition of the NYG.
Delta State Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, who was represented by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly (DSHA), assured that his administration was committed to empowering athletes and improving sports infrastructure across the state. He reiterated that Delta would continue to serve as a welcoming host, having produced numerous athletes who have represented Nigeria on the global stage.
”Today is a special moment for Delta state as we welcome all of you, athletes, officials and visitors across to Asaba for the 9th National Youth Games.
“This is more than a sports, it is a celebration of our young people, unity and of the nation’s prosperous future in sports which brings us together as one people”, Oborevwori stated.
Bukola Olopade, the Director General of the NSC, highlighted the significant progress made under the leadership of Shehu Dikko, noting that the 9th NYG provided an opportunity to celebrate, discover, and nurture the country’s young talents who could one day represent Nigeria as future sports stars.
Onoriode Oborevwori, Chairman of the local organizing committee for the NYG and Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, assured that the state had made exceptional preparations for the event, with top-tier facilities ready to host over six thousand athletes.
The opening ceremony featured the hoisting of the national flag, Delta State flag, and the 9th NYG flag by military personnel, alongside performances, calisthenics, and a march past by state contingents.
However, despite the festivities, the event saw a low turnout of residents, with only about one-third of the stadium’s 23,000 seats occupied.
