President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting the polytechnic sub-sector to boost productivity, industrial development, and sustainable economic growth.

Speaking at the 22nd convocation ceremony of the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Ogun State, on Wednesday, the President also revealed plans to equip students with essential skills by revamping the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) content delivery to 80 percent practical and 20 percent theory.

Tinubu, represented by Senior Director of Polytechnics and Allied Institutions, Dr. Ejeh Usman, emphasized that by prioritizing education and skills training, Nigeria can unlock the full potential of its citizens and advance the country’s progress.

He said, “The President has made education a top priority, ranking it third in the budget presentation to the National Assembly on December 18, 2024, right after defense and infrastructure. This move is part of the “Renew Hope Agenda,” which aims to transform the country’s education sector.

“Also under the renewed hope agenda of Mr President, the Federal Minister of Education has decided to transform the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector with tweaking the focus of TVET content delivery to 80% practical and 20% theory for students in fields like renewable energy and agriculture. This change aims to equip students with the skills needed for the modern workforce.

“It is also noteworthy that the federal government of Nigeria considers the Polytechnic sub sector as an important operational anchor of its renewal to ensure Nigeria on the trajectories of productivity, industrial development, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, and assist in providing decent work for young people.”

Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, emphasized the importance of harnessing the talents and creativity of youth to build a self-sustaining economy.

Abiodun, while urging the graduating students to apply their learnings regardless of their career paths, assured that his administration would continue to invest in education, infrastructure, and industrial development.

In his convocation lecture titled ‘Renewed Hope Agenda: Brain Drain and Japa Syndrome – The Way Forward,’ the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, represented by the State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, lamented the inadequate healthcare, poor educational infrastructure, and increasing social unrest that push professionals to seek a better quality of life abroad.

He argued that to mitigate this, the Federal Government should invest in education, skill development, and improve working conditions to create viable opportunities for professionals to succeed locally.

“Many young and educated Nigerians find themselves trapped in a cycle of unemployment with wages that do not match the rising cost of living.”

“While the Renew Hope Agenda outlines strategies to curb mass emigration, its success depends on addressing root causes such as unemployment, economic instability, poor wages, and insecurity. By investing in education, skill development, and improving working conditions, we can create viable opportunities for professionals to thrive locally,” he said.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the rector of the institution, Dr. Mukail Akinde, urged the graduating students to work hard, avoid crime, and support the President in improving the country.

Akinde also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his interventions in the education sector, including the introduction of student loans, which he said have been crucial to the remarkable progress in the polytechnic sub-sector.
