A founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, has urged President Bola Tinubu to assign more responsibilities to Vice President Kashim Shettima in managing the nation’s economy after retaining him as his running mate for the 2027 general elections.
Okechukwu said he was pleased that, despite weeks of speculation, political manoeuvring and uncertainty surrounding the vice-presidential ticket, President Tinubu eventually retained Shettima.
The APC chieftain explained that his appeal was based on the belief that although Tinubu’s economic reforms have delivered notable improvements in macroeconomic stability, hunger and poverty remain major challenges requiring urgent attention.
Okechukwu said in a statement, “May I commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for graciously retaining His Excellency Kashim Shettima as Vice President and humbly request that more powers be delegated to him to oversee economic affairs.
“I am making this humble appeal based on the fact that the economic reforms of Mr. President have yielded significant gains at the macroeconomic stability level.
“However, hunger and poverty remain pressing challenges, which invariably require the urgent delegation of greater economic responsibilities to the Vice President, given his background in rural development and economic management.”
Okechukwu also recalled that the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a leading advocate of neoliberal economic policies, stated in its 2026 Article IV Consultation on Nigeria that the country needs more inclusive economic growth, noting that about 63 percent of Nigerians now live below the national poverty line.
He stressed that while the President’s economic reforms have strengthened key macroeconomic indicators, greater efforts should be made to ensure those gains translate into improved living conditions for ordinary Nigerians.
According to him, Vice President Shettima’s academic training in Agricultural Economics, banking experience and track record in public service position him well to support initiatives aimed at reducing poverty, advancing rural development and making economic growth more inclusive.
