As President Bola Tinubu’s administration reaches its midterm point, Yabagi Sani, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), has described the President’s economic reforms as courageous and far-reaching but criticized them for lacking the structures necessary to reduce the burden on everyday Nigerians.

Speaking during a current affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM in Ilese-Ijebu monitored by a correspondent Sani said the economic policies introduced under Tinubu reflect a capitalist approach that traditionally benefits a privileged few, while overlooking the broader population.

He acknowledged that moves like the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates make sense in theory but noted that they have yet to translate into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens.

The ADP Chairman raised concerns about the execution of these policies, stating that while government announcements are often ambitious, the real issue lies in how these policies are put into action.

Sani said, “What Bola Ahmed Tinubu is trying to do is run a highly geared capitalist economy in an environment that is substantially weak and poor. That’s the real problem.

“I will say it is a mixed bag. The reforms introduced by President Tinubu are without doubt bold, fundamental, and tough. On a long-term basis, they may yield the desired results but right now, they’re hurting the common people.

“Governments are always loud in policy declarations, but the problem lies in implementation. I haven’t seen anything that convinces me this administration will end up in the good books of Nigerians, economically speaking”.

Sani, who also contested in the 2019 presidential election under the ADP, said Tinubu’s economic direction appears detached from the harsh realities facing the country.

“When Tinubu came into office two years ago, around 103 million Nigerians were living below the poverty line. Today, that number has increased to 129 million.

“That means nearly 25 to 30 million additional people have slipped into poverty largely due to the removal of fuel subsidies,” he said.

He cautioned that unless the government realigns its reform agenda to reflect the needs of the population, it risks eroding public confidence, no matter how visionary its policies might appear.
