According to reports, Chelsea’s attempt to re-sign former player Marc Guehi during the January transfer window has run into trouble.
Under manager Enzo Maresca, the Blues are keen to add players to their roster this month.
The Mirror claims that Chelsea’s rigid salary policy may be a major factor in their inability to get the 24-year-old defender to return to Stamford Bridge.
Under the club’s current contract arrangement, players are bound to long-term agreements but get a reduced base wage. Nevertheless, Guehi is anticipated to cost more than £50 million; during the summer transfer window, Crystal Palace provided an asking price of £70 million for him.
The English defender is also apparently looking for a weekly salary of about £200,000, which could be problematic for Chelsea’s wage policy.
Given the circumstances, Maresca’s team may lose out on the highly desired defender, who has been in great demand in recent months.
This month, Liverpool is also allegedly interested in Guehi, who enrolled at Chelsea’s academy at the age of seven.
The remaining 18 months of the former Swansea City loanee’s Crystal Palace contract have begun.
Guehi, who cost an estimated £18 million to join Palace from Chelsea in 2021, has made more than 100 appearances for the Eagles since then.
