Paris Saint-Germain’s coach, Bafodé Diakhaby, has departed the club to join Liverpool.
Prior to this, the club dismissed set-piece coach Aaron Briggs midway through the season, in which the Reds recorded the poorest set-piece performance among Europe’s top five leagues.
This season, Liverpool have conceded 12 goals from set pieces, one of which was a corner against Wolves in December. Just two days before Liverpool’s New Year’s Day match against Leeds United, which ended in a 0-0 draw, Briggs made the decision to leave.
When Aaron Briggs departed from his position as set-piece coach, Arne Slot promoted analyst Lewis Mahoney to the matchday bench. In September, Mahoney transferred from Southampton to Liverpool, where he took on the role of first-team set-piece analyst for the squad. Most of the time, he works at the AXA Training Centre.
Bafodé Diakhaby, a highly regarded youth development coach with over a decade of experience at Paris Saint-Germain’s prestigious academy, has been signed by The Reds to aid in training and developing young talent.
The 36-year-old has officially begun his role as the Youth Development Phase (YDP) Academy coach at AXA, with the job offer confirmed on LinkedIn.
The PSG academy is renowned as one of the leading venues in Europe for nurturing young talent, having produced famous players such as Kingsley Coman, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Adrien Rabiot, and Presnel Kimpembe.
As Diakhaby was usually the first coach to work with the players in the early stages, his role involved helping to identify and develop the talent that would ultimately become top-level professionals.
Diakhaby also penned a farewell message to PSG, which he shared on LinkedIn: “With a lot of gratitude for all those who have shared this journey, both on and off the pitch.
“The next part of the story will happen somewhere else, just like starting a fresh adventure. But some things stay the same: the connections, the friendships, the memories, and the love for the game.
“PSG will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will keep watching them closely with a lot of care and love.”
