When police broke up a procession led by members of the outlawed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, or IMN, popularly known as Shiites, there was mayhem in Kaduna on Friday.
Activities to commemorate International QudsQud’s Day included the procession.
Before the police arrived, ZINGTIE noticed that the IMN members had gathered near the Ahmadu Bello Way roundabout in Katsina. They attempted to disperse the group in an effort to avert a breakdown of law and order.
Residents were shaken and terrified by the procession, especially those whose stores are along Ahmadu Bello Way.
Many reportedly closed their businesses out of concern that they would get entangled in the altercation.
According to the authorities, the IMN was prohibited by the federal government; hence, the procession was illegal.
The Kaduna State Police Command spokesman, ASP Mansir Hassan, clarified that the IMN members attacked innocent civilians in the name of a procession when they emerged in the morning with hazardous weapons.
“The IMN members attacked the police with dangerous weapons when they attempted to disperse them, resulting to some policemen sustaining injuries.”
He went on to say that several suspects in possession of potentially lethal weapons have been taken into custody and would face charges in court when the inquiry is over.
