On Thursday, President Donald Trump warned European nations against aligning with Canada in the ongoing trade dispute.
He cautioned that any action detrimental to the U.S. economy would lead to significant consequences.
Trump posted on Truth Social: “If the European Union collaborates with Canada to harm the U.S. economy, massive tariffs, much higher than what is currently planned, will be imposed on both countries to protect the closest allies they’ve ever had!”
Earlier in the week, Trump introduced a 25 percent tariff on imported vehicles, adding to previously announced tariffs and reciprocal tariffs scheduled to take effect on April 2.
The trade conflict has contributed to a downturn in the U.S. stock market and raised global trade tensions as nations prepare their next steps.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen criticized the new vehicle tariff, calling it “bad for businesses, worse for consumers.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also condemned the move, labeling it a “direct attack” on workers in Canada and warning of potential retaliation.
