Victor Osimhen, an attacker for the Super Eagles, has faced criticism at his club base in Turkey due to claims that he purposefully caused a ban prior to the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, competition.
Osimhen is anticipated to shortly join his teammates in the Nigerian squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Nigerian, who had already received cards against Beşiktaş, Kocaelispor, and Fenerbahçe, was walking a tightrope in terms of discipline going into Saturday’s Super Lig match against Antalyaspor.
The Super Eagles star striker has been suspended for one game after receiving a yellow card in the 85th minute of Saturday’s match against Antalyaspor.
Since Osimhen is included in the Super Eagles’ 28-man AFCON team, he will serve his ban during the international competition and will not be able to play against Kasımpaşa next weekend.
Osimhen may still be referred to the Turkish Football Federation Disciplinary Committee, or PFDK, for further inquiry, according to Turkish publication Gazete Gerçek.
The disciplinary code’s Article 37 addresses situations in which players are accused of “deliberately receiving a yellow card.”
Article 37 of the PFDK states that a player may be banished for two games if proven guilty.
If the Super Eagles go to the final, Osimhen might miss games against İstanbul Başakşehir, Kasımpaşa, Fethiyespor, Trabzonspor, and Gaziantep FK.
