Following a violent altercation that apparently claimed the lives of at least two persons, panic broke out at Lagos Island’s well-known Balogun Market on Wednesday.

Unsettling footage from the incident was featured in videos that went viral on social media. In one video that ZINGTIR was able to view, a man was seen lying still on the ground after reportedly being attacked with a machete.

The suspected attacker was shown in another video stripped naked and allegedly lynched by a vengeful crowd. There is still uncertainty surrounding the cause of the uprising.

Some witnesses claimed the violence was caused by an inter-tribal conflict between Yoruba and Igbo traders, while others suggested it was the consequence of a clash with a cult.

As traders and bystanders rushed for safety, stores were quickly shuttered in the aftermath. At the time this report was filed, security personnel had not yet issued an official comment regarding the occurrence.
