Wayne Rooney, former Manchester United striker, has praised Yann Sommer, the 36-year-old goalkeeper for Inter Milan, following his stellar performance in the Italian club’s Champions League semifinal win over Barcelona.
Inter Milan triumphed 4-3 at the San Siro after a 3-3 draw in the first leg in Spain.
Rooney commended Sommer for his exceptional display, as he prevented Barcelona from scoring on several occasions.
“That’s what you need when you’re trying to win trophies and get to finals, you need your goalkeeper to come up with big moments and big saves and that’s what he’s done. Some will say that’s his job and he’s there to save the ball, but it’s the amount of saves across the two legs.”
Sommer made a series of impressive saves in the second leg, recording seven stops, including two against Lamine Yamal. He had also made seven saves in the first leg’s 3-3 draw the previous week.
The Swiss international has featured in 89 games for Inter Milan across all competitions.
