Armed robbers invaded the Awolowo Hall of Residence at the University of Ibadan in Oyo State on Saturday morning, stealing valuables worth thousands of naira from students. The stolen items included mobile phones, jewellery, clothing, laptops, and other personal belongings.
A student who witnessed the incident but preferred to remain anonymous recounted the ordeal: “Aside from the lost items, the affected students were tortured during the raids that lasted for a few hours. The robbers were armed with guns and other dangerous weapons, and they threatened to harm anyone who resisted.”
Another source revealed that the security team was alerted by the screams of the affected students and quickly responded to the situation. “The security section was alerted by the screaming of the affected students as they hurriedly swung into action. Some of the suspects who were arrested have been handed over to the police at Sango Police Station. The police are currently investigating the incident and working to recover the stolen items.”
The Public Relations Officer of the University, Joke Akinpelu, confirmed the incident, stating: “The reports from the hall wardens stated that the robbers carted away the mobile telephone handsets of the students. We are working closely with the police to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice and that the students are provided with support and assistance.
The university authorities have also increased security measures on campus, with additional patrols and surveillance to prevent future incidents.
As of press time, efforts to reach the state police public relations officer, Adewale Osifeso, for comment were unsuccessful.
