Eighty-five young Nigerians have been selected to pursue postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom under the prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship schemes for the 2025 academic year.

The British High Commission confirmed that this year’s awardees include 39 Chevening scholars, one Chevening fellow, and 45 Commonwealth scholars, all chosen through a rigorous selection process.

To honour the recipients, a pre-departure reception was hosted in Abuja, with another scheduled for September in Lagos. Speaking at the Abuja ceremony, British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria Gill Lever described the award as a recognition of excellence and leadership potential.

“We are proud to see another batch of scholars depart for the UK in the coming weeks, knowing they will return to strengthen an already vibrant Chevening network in Nigeria,” Lever said.

“These scholars will come back with invaluable experiences and fresh perspectives, sharing insights into UK systems, policies, and culture—using them to drive positive change in Nigeria and across the world.”

The Director of Programmes at the British Council Nigeria, Chikodi Onyemerela, urged the awardees to embrace the responsibility that comes with the scholarship.

“As you travel to the United Kingdom, you are not only pursuing your personal dreams but also carrying the aspirations of your communities,” Onyemerela remarked.

“We trust that the knowledge, skills, and networks you will gain will return as seeds of innovation, leadership, and progress for Nigeria, especially at this critical stage of its development.

Among the recipients is Tijjanni Mukaddas, the 2025 Chevening Fellow, who will undertake research at the Oxford Centre of Islamic Studies.

“I feel truly humbled and grateful. With over 18 million Nigerian children currently out of school, the Chevening Fellowship offers me the chance to design impactful policies that can bring them into the education system. Studying at Oxford University is a dream come true, and I am honoured to embark on this journey,” Mukaddas said.

Another awardee, Commonwealth Scholar Cynthia Okoli, who will study at both the Royal Veterinary College and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, expressed her excitement.

“I look forward to enhancing my professional and interpersonal skills while building friendships and networks that cut across disciplines and cultures,” Okoli said.

“These experiences will broaden my outlook and strengthen my ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary settings.”

The Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships are among the most competitive global awards, open to individuals who combine academic excellence with leadership ability and a commitment to driving development in their home countries.

Nigeria has one of the largest alumni communities for both programmes, with over 4,500 scholars—3,000 from the Commonwealth and 1,500 from Chevening—many of whom currently serve in government, academia, and the private sector
