In response to the growing conflict in Ukraine, French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne voiced hope on Monday that “China sends very clear messages to Russia.”
Sejourne revealed this at a Beijing press conference after his meeting with Wang Yi, his Chinese counterpart.
The French Foreign Minister repeatedly mentioned the need to achieve a durable peace with Ukraine.
He said: “We are convinced there will be no lasting peace if it is not negotiated with the Ukrainians.
“There will be no security for Europeans if there is no peace in accordance with international law.
“It is an essential issue for us, which is why France is determined to maintain a close dialogue with China.”
He noted that to ensure that respect for international law is upheld, Beijing could play a “key role.”
Following a visit by his predecessor, Catherine Colonna, in November, Sejourne is the second French foreign minister to visit China in less than six months.
Macron made a second visit to a southern Chinese university in April of last year, where he was greeted like a rock star by hundreds of yelling students and supporters.
However, he came under fire for allegedly cozying up to Beijing and suggesting that Europe shouldn’t be a “follower” of the United States in the event of a clash with China over Taiwan.
This week’s visit by the top diplomat is a part of the celebration of France and China’s 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
